i think there is a difference between maintaining an ethical value (for a purpose) and maintaining a value (at cost)
...i mean, the difference is really about having any ethics at all
but "the quality of being ethical" is a purpose as well, so maintaining ethics at cost (for the purpose of being a Good Person etc) can also be a violation/mockery of personal values
